Post England Game (by Mark Appleton)

that Obama endorses gay marriage. That really makes me respect our president. I’ve already seen several posts on tumblr saying that this changes things drastically and that there shouldn’t be any more excuses for putting the issue off any longer. Now, I hate to point this out, but I feel like it has to be said. This doesn’t change anything. At all. Obama said that he “personally” believes that gay marriage should be allowed. He did not say his “administration” believes this. There is an enormous difference between these two terms and people seem to have ignored it. Regardless of what Obama personally believes, the president cannot run a government based solely on those beliefs. Any president will have to put his or her personal beliefs aside at one point in order to run the country as a whole instead of acting on something so fragile. That is how it works. I do think it’s sad that that’s how it is, but that’s it. Also, as long as Obama is president, gay marriage will never have a blanket allowance for the entire United States. Obama has stated numerous times, even before his official endorsement, that same-sex marriages and the laws surrounding them should be left in the control of the states. Here is a link to an interview he did that supports this (http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2012/05/09/obama-same-sex-marriage-should-be-legal). I don’t want anyone to think that I am not happy about this. I am elated. It takes a lot of courage and strength for someone in Obama’s position to talk about his personal beliefs. However, the fact still stands that even after Obama’s affirmation, I still can’t get married.
